Eight new wells were added to Caldwell County's closed Lick Mountain Landfill. The wells will allow the landfill gas or bio-gas created by decomposing trash to be collected. Once collected, the gas will be flared (a.k.a burned).
The reason for doing this is to reduce the global warming effects of the landfill. Burning the bio-gas reduces the greenhouse gases coming from the landfill. Greenhouse gases cause global warming by reflecting or trapping the earth's radiant heat which would otherwise be lost to space.
The bio-gas coming from the landfill is roughly %50 methane. Methane is a potent green house gas, 25 times better at reflecting heat that carbon-dioxide. When the bio-gas is burned, it changes the methane to less harmful carbon-dioxide and water vapor.
